50-year-old homeless woman was mowed down by a speeding SUV, allegedly driven by a young Bareilly Girl, and was dragged for close to 300 metres in posh Connaught Place area in Lutyens’ Delhi, police said on Tuesday.
The incident took place around 8.45 pm on Sunday when the old woman was crossing the road near PVR Rivoli, they said.
“After the accident, the driver stopped for few seconds but later sped away in a bid to flee from the spot. A biker chased the SUV and signaled about the woman she was dragging but the driver did not stop until police team used barricade to block her way near Connaught Place outer circle,” said an official of New Delhi district.
The accused, who was driving the SUV (Jeep Compass), was identified as Shreya Aggarwal (20), a resident of Bareilly. She was accompanied by three friends – Megha, Baby and Rani. All of them are fashion designing students, the police said.
The homeless woman, later identified as Phoolwati, was sent to Ram Manohar Lohia hospital where she was declared brought dead, police said.
The accused was arrested from the spot, police said. However, she was released later on bail. “The accused, who was booked for causing death due to rash and negligence driving, was arrested but later released on bail.
The vehicle has also been impounded. The SUV is registered in the name of accused’s father.
