Labour MP Kate Osamor has said she is “proud” to live in her £750k council house despite earning £77,000 a year.
The former Shadow Development Secretary of Nigerian descent, 50, lives with her 29-year-old son Ishmale in Haringey, North London.
She earns a salary of £77,379 on top of expenses and he earns up to £43,835 working as her chief of staff.
But on Christmas Eve, she tweeted: “I will always remember that nearly 30yrs ago I was a homeless single mum who secured a tenancy to my home.
“Everyone deserves a home for life. I remain proud, not ashamed, to be in social housing.”
Her post was shared thousands of times, and liked almost 10,000 times, with many Twitter users slamming her for taking a social housing space when others are in genuine need.
Ishmael, 29, was caught with £2,500-worth of MDMA, cocaine, ketamine and cannabis at last year’s Bestival festival.
Osamor, who has been the MP for Edmonton since 2015, was facing a formal probe by Commons’ bosses over refusing to sack her son Ishmael from her parliamentary office.
The party had claimed that the MP knew nothing about her son’s case until after the sentencing last month following his guilty plea in September.
But she resigned from the shadow cabinet after reportedly throwing water at a journalist amid a row over Ishmale.
Ms Osamor said sheleft in order to support her family “through a difficult time.”
