Wangsa Maju MP Datin Paduka Dr Tan Yee Kew is unperturbed by a viral video of her sleeping in Parliament, saying that she is too busy to bother with trivial issues.

A video, which shows Tan in the background trying unsuccessfully to stay awake as Damansara MP Tony Pua speaks during the afternoon Parliamentary session last Thursday (July 19), has been circulating on social media.

Facebook page Tentera Troll Kebangsaan Malaysia posted a video, cropped closely to show Tan nodding off, with the sound of someone snoring dubbed over in.

As of 6.30pm on Tuesday (July 24), the video has received over 44,000 views.

Several netizens criticised Tan for falling asleep during Parliament proceedings.

Many noted that she had also forgotten to bring along her identity card during the 14th General Election nomination day.

Tan said that she is a “normal” person, and cannot function at a “100 per cent level” all the time.

“I was having the flu. I didn’t see the doctor and I took some flu medication that day,” she said.

“I didn’t expect the medicine to be so strong and I felt very drowsy.

“I might have dozed off for a short time, but I don’t thing it is a big thing,” she said.

Tan said she would rather focus on her constituents than bother about the video.

“These people have nothing better to do. I am too busy. I just want to focus on my work. I don’t have time to bother,” she said.

Tan said what matters more is how hard she works for her constituency.

“I managed to relocate market traders because the landowner wanted to take back their land. I found another site for these traders to operate,” she said.

Tan added that she is expediting work for a recreational park for residents to enjoy and also working to get stretches of road in her constituency resurfaced.

“I work day and night – you think I’m lazy? It will be my constituency who judges me, not some keyboard cybertroopers,” she said.

“I have better things to do and lots of things to work on,” she added.
