A mother who went shopping for sexy underwear in a Victoria’s Secret store with her dead baby stuffed into her handbag has been jailed.
Security guards suspected teenager Tiona Rodriguez of shoplifting and noticed a foul smell coming from her bag at a store in Manhattan, New York.
However when they inspected her bag they found the gruesome source of the smell – a tiny decomposing baby.
The teenager is said to have killed her baby after she delivered it in a bathroom in her friend’s house in Queens.
New York news station PIX11 reports that Rodriguez has now been jailed for 16 years.
She was sentenced on Thursday after pleading guilty to manslaughter in January in what the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office said was a ‘shocking’ case.
Rodriguez had been a teenager in 2013 when she was stopped by security, who suspected her of shoplifting a pair of skinny jeans worth $44.50 at a Victoria’s Secret in Herald Square.
That’s when security said they noticed a foul odour coming from around her somewhere.
At that point, the guard had no idea of the horror they were about to uncover.
A search, routine in cases like shoplifting, finally uncovered the appalling source of that foul stench.
The news channel said it later emerged that Rodriguez had deliberately killed the newborn child after delivering the baby in the bathroom of her friend’s apartment in Queens.
That was according to district attorney Cyrus Vance in January.
Her son had weighed about eight pounds at birth making it a normal size.
She was 17 at the time, according to the New York Post .
The channel said a post mortem was required to determine what if any foul play had taken place.
The medical examiner later ruled the infant’s death was caused by homicidal asphyxiation.
And the tragedy didn’t end there.
PIX11 said that baby was not her first child. She also had a son when she was 14.
Her family didn’t know about that pregnancy until she went into labour. Then she delivered again in 2012, but that child didn’t survive.
