Musician PJ Powers has enjoyed successful career that spans over 30 years and has crossed barriers of both age and race through her work.

While her unique afropop sound was popular in the 1980s and 1990s and gained appeal across Africa and in South African townships, her activism received much backlash and led to a performance ban from the apartheid government.

She joined Azania Mosaka to share more of her story and some of the experiences that make up what she says has been a ‘brilliant life’.

I can’t really believe that I have done all of this, I am proud and amazed because it’s a really full life.

We were separated then, which I don’t really like drawing attention to, but black people embraced me and I was so caught up in that unconditional love. I was young and passionate and I just knew that I was on the right journey.
