A New York teenager Nikki Yovino is expected to spend one year in prison, after she falsely claimed that two college football players had raped her.

Nikki (19), admitted this week that the sex she had with the two footballers in question was consensual, and that she had lied about it to the police. The damage done to the image of football players is likely immense and there are reports that they will consider suing Yovino.

Speaking on behalf of the footballers, lawyer Frank Riccio II said: “While this disposition does not replace that which the boys lost, it does send a powerful message that lying about a serious incident carries serious consequences.”

Now that everybody knows what happened, the jury is out on the why.

According to the CT Post, which has had sight of the arrest warrant affidavit, “She admitted that she made up the allegation of sexual assault against [the football players] because it was the first thing that came to mind and she didn’t want to lose [another male student] as a friend and potential boyfriend.”

“She stated that she believed when [the other male student] heard the allegation it would make him angry and sympathetic to her.”

According to the Post, Yovino will get a three year sentence, suspended after she serves one year in prison and followed by three years’ probation.
