Police in Port Elizabeth have announced that the mother of a baby that was abandoned recently has been found and arrested.
Kabega Park police arrested the baby’s mother in Kuyga, Port Elizabeth. They acted on information from a member of the community that indicated she would be visiting an autn in the area.
The woman, 24, was arrested around 13:00 on Friday afternoon.
She is set to appear in the St Alban’s Magistrate’s Court on Monday, June 18, on charges of child abandonment.
The Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offenses Unit in Port Elizabeth is investigating.
According to News24, the three-month-old baby was found in a muddy ditch by a passerby on Draaifontein Road, Greenbushes.
He took the baby to a local NGO, who then handed her to police.
Officers at the station’s victim centre bathed and dressed her in warm, clean clothes, as well as fed her warm milk as she was still cold from the wet clothes she was found in.
She was then taken to a place of safety after social workers at the Dora Nginza Hospital assessed her.
